512MB is not really enough but there are a couple of walkthroughs on the web that describe how to dismantle the box and install a 2GB stick - a bit of time and $50 to fix the memory issue. On the current model, the memory is the biggest weakness. There was an earlier statement that the new model is not a significant upgrade to this one but most reviews on the new models feel that it addresses the 2 biggest weaknesses, memory and processor speed.

It comes with backup software so I can automatically backup all my computers on the network. It has a web server so it is easy to share files and security to manage who sees what. It has enough ventilation to keep the processor and drives relatively cool. It is easy to use, reliable and easy to manage the drives in the unit.
It is a pretty good box and yes, you can probably build one cheaper but it all depends on how much work you are willing to put into the server. Some people like to custom build everything themselves - good for you I used to be that way too - but instead of thread crapping here go to some other forum and brag about it there. I challenge anyone to build a system, load an OS, transfer all your files to it, and have it automatically do daily incremental backups of every computer on your network in less than half an hour. WHS is for people that value their time - I had mine out of the box and running in less than half an hour. At some point you have to put a price on your time to put the system together and set it up and manage it.
The point is any monkey can build a computer and load it up with Linux. IMO, the mediasmart is for someone who is looking for a NAS but want something a bit more flexible and user friendly. Where you would have limitations is if you plan on using this for CPU-intensive things like media transcoding, but I think those who need this capability wouldn't be looking at this anyway. I also take a subset of the important files for offsite backup. To me, this is the biggest advantage of having a WHS. Of course, it totally depends on how fast you fill it up, but with WHS, there's more flexibility in adding storage and there's a good chance you'll spend less on buying harddrives over the long term.Īnd there are other pros like having automatic daily image backups of every PC in the house. By the time you need your 4th one, maybe you can get a 4TB for $100. In the WHS scenario, you may not need to buy your 3rd disk until a year from now, and by then you can get a 2TB for the same price as a 1TB now.
Especially in setups like RAID5, where you have to buy 4 1TB drives upfront but you only end up using 1 TB of it at first. You can add hard drives of any size, as needed.
WHS has some advantages over RAID in terms of storage growth over a few years. This means not everything needs to be mirrored and you do not need to preallocate how much data is to be mirrored, thus saving storage space. Redundancy is done by enabling duplication on only the folders that contain data you care about, and the system ensures they're written to more than 1 physical drive. Hard drives can be added as needed via the bays or eSATA/USB, all without powering the machine off, and they become part of the storage pool in under 5 minutes. WHS is one of the best in those areas, IMO. For that purpose, the CPU and even the RAM are more than adequate, and the only concerns are the ability to expand the storage and storage redundancy. If its main purpose is a centralized file sharing and fully automatic backup server, it does an awesome job.
